George Holmes was born on 25 October 1895, the only son of Robert Wilson Holmes of Ivylea, Roslyn Crescent, Hathersage, Sheffield. Educated at King Edward VII’s School, Sheffield and Magdalen College, Oxford, he was a Cadet at the University O.T.C. On 8 April 1915 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. With the 1st Battalion in France from 17 January 1917, he was killed in action on 9 April 1917 and buried at Wancourt British Cemetery. Sold with recipient’s card and copied m.i.c. and other details.
