Clement William Hawkins was appointed Lieutenant in the Royal Marines on 21 July 1870, and was not promoted to Captain until 14 years later. He served with the Royal Marine Battalion defending Suakin and was engaged in the operations in the Eastern Soudan, 1884-85, being present at the actions at Hasheen, 20 March 1885; attack on Sir J. McNiel’s zareba at Tofrek, 22 March; the attack on the square of Guards and Marines, 24 March; and at the taking and burning of Tamaai, 3 April (Medal with two clasps). He retired on 2 April 1886.
