Thomas Charles Scott was born on 18 August 1840, and was appointed Ensign in the Rifle Brigade on 11 March 1859. He was promoted to Lieutenant in June 1863 and served with the 3rd Battalion in the operations against the Mohmands of Shabkadr (Medal with clasp). Promoted to Captain in January 1874, he served throughout the second phase of the Ashantee War in 1874, including the battles of Amoaful and Ordahsu, and the battle and capture of Coomassie (Medal with clasp). He is mentioned in several accounts of the campaign, including The Drums of Kumasi by Allan Lloyd. He retired as Lieutenant-Colonel in July 1882, and succeeded his brother as the 5th Earl of Clonmell in 1891. He was a Deputy Lieutenant of County Kildare and A.D.C. to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Lord Clonmell died in 1896.
