Matthew Daniel O’Connell was born at Cork on 5 April 1847, and qualified as M.D. and M.Ch. at the Royal University of Ireland in 1869. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon on the Medical Staff and Surgeon in the Army Medical Department on 1 April 1871, becoming Surgeon Major in April 1883, Surgeon Lieutenant-Colonel in April 1891, and Brigade Surgeon Lieutenant-Colonel in November 1895. He served in the Soudan campaign in 1885 (Medal with clasp, bronze star) and on the North West Frontier of India in 1897-98 (Medal with clasp). He was promoted to Colonel in the Royal Army Medical Corps in April 1901, and retired in April 1907. Colonel O’Connell was the author of Climate and Ague, 1909.
