The battle of St Mihiel, fought on 12-13 September 1918, resulted in victory for the American troops under General John Joseph ‘Black Jack’ Pershing (1860-1948), who captured over 13,000 prisoners. Myron Timothy Herrick (1854-1929), Republican politician who served as the governor of Ohio from 1904-6, was the US ambassador to France from 1912-14 and from 1921 until his death
