99th Duke of Edinburgh’s Wiltshire Regiment (2), obv. cross with ‘99’ above enclosed by wreath bearing battle honours, rev. engraved, ‘220 Yards 1928 C. V. Alexander John Yardley became Quarter Master with the Wiltshire Regiment in April 1899. He served with the regiment in South Africa and saw action at Colesburg, Bethlehem and Wittebergen. For his services he was awarded the Queen’s medal with three clasps and King’s medal with two clasps, was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 10 September 1901) and granted the honorary rank of Captain in November 1900. Appointed to the honorary rak of Major in April 1914, he served in operations in France and Flanders from 13 July 1915 to 6 September 1915. After the war he retired with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
