William Charles Burtonshaw was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire in December 1902 and entered the Royal Navy as a Shipwright Apprentice in August 1918, thereby just qualifying for a single British War Medal 1914-20. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1936, he was advanced to Temporary Warrant Shipwright in February 1943, his wartime appointments thereafter including attachment to the French battleship Courbet from March to September 1943, and service aboard the cruiser H.M.S. Hawkins from August 1944 until the end of hostilities.
