Discharged after several seagoing appointments as a Corporal in January 1851, he immediately transferred into the Royal Navy as a Ship’s Corporal and went on to witness active service aboard H.M.S. Cumberland in the Baltic operations of 1854. Copeland, who was advanced to Master at Arms in May 1858 and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1860, was finally pensioned ashore in April 1864.
