David Garrick (1717-79), the Shakespearean actor and theatrical producer, purchased Hampton House in 1754 and built his riverside temple to Shakespeare in 1755-6. The house, known as Garrick’s Villa, was sold by Garrick’s widow, the German dancer Eva Maria Veigel, in 1822
