John G. Ashcroft attested for the 10th (Scottish) Battalion, Liverpool Regiment on 29 August 1914 and was one of the original contingent who travelled to France aboard the S.S. Maidan in November 1914. He was discharged on 2 February 1917 and was entitled to the Silver War Badge.
