Arthur John Close was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers in July 1891, and was advanced to Lieutenant in July 1894, while out in India. Subsequently attached to the 4th Battalion, Bombay Sappers and Miners in the Punjab Frontier operations of 1897-98, he was advanced to Captain in July 1902, but resigned his commission sometime before the Great War.
