Valentine Burke was born in Bilston, Staffordshire and enlisted at Wolverhampton. Serving as a C.S.M. with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, he was awarded the Military Medal. He was killed in action on 31 July 1917, aged 33 years, whilst serving as a Corporal with the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
