Matthew Townley was born in Northampton in July 1818 and joined the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman aboard H.M.S. Howe in August 1840. Appointed a Sick Berth Attendant in April 1851 aboard the Vengeance, he went on to witness active service in the same ship in the Crimea War, including the Sebastopol operations. Townley was pensioned ashore from the Wellesley in March 1868, in which month he received his L.S. & G.C. Medal.
