Arthur Haywood Stevens was born in Leicester on 26 June 1881 and attested for the West Yorkshire Regiment at York in 13 January 1898. He served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War, and was wounded at Monte Christo on 17 February 1900. Whilst in South Africa he transferred to the Army Pay Corps on 17 November 1901, and was advanced Staff Sergeant on 27 October 1914. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct medal per Army Order 333 of 1916, and for his services during the Great War at home he was awarded an Immediate Meritorious Service Medal in February 1919 (London Gazette 22 February 1919) and was Mentioned in Despatches by the War Office on 25 March 1919. He was discharged on 19 June 1919, after 21 years and 158 days’ service, and died in Plymouth on 22 July 1940.
