James Chambers was born in Weybridge, Surrey, on 10 October 1869 and attested for the 17th Lancers at London on 24 October 1887. He transferred to the Army Pay Corps on 1 April 1893 and was promoted Sergeant on 16 July 1897. He served in South Africa from 18 May 1899 to 8 June 1904, and was promoted Staff Sergeant on 1 April 1901, and Staff Quartermaster Sergeant on 1 April 1904. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order 90 of April 1906, and was discharged in 1909. He saw further served at home during the Great War, as an Acting Staff Sergeant Major at the Regimental Pay Office in York, and was later an A.R.P. Warden during the Second World War. he died on the Isle of Wight on 5 April 1946.
