Bernard Milnes Etchells was born in 1899 and attested for the Royal Horse Guards in London on 24 January 1917. Transferring to the Guards Machine Gun Regiment on 10 May 1918, he served with the during the Great War on the Western Front from 18 May 1918. He was discharged on 31 March 1920, after 3 years and 11 days’ service. He subsequently served with the Metropolitan Police.
