Léon Blum was a French socialist politician and three-time Prime Minister of France between 1936 and 1947. After his premiership, he became a strong advocate for a united Europe, and continued to campaign for various social causes until his death in 1950. Slavery, first abolished on 4 February 1794, was restored throughout the majority of the French empire in 1802. On 27 April 1848 the final abolition of slavery in the French colonies was proclaimed.
