Henry Kilby was born at Deptford, Kent, in 1827 and attested for the Royal Marines at Chatham on 17 February 1847. Posted to 45 Company, Chatham Division, he served as a Corporal in H.M.S. Royal George in the Baltic, and as a Sergeant in H.M.S. Transit in the Crimea. He was discharged due to length of service on 15 May 1869. His Long Service and Good Conduct Medal was issued in January 1869, the rank of ‘Pay Sergeant’ being unique on a wide suspension Naval long service medal.
