M.C. London Gazette 30 July 1919.

‘During the attack near Pontruet on September 29th, 1918, he led his company in the attack on Forest Trench with the greatest gallantry, and throughout the day handled it with conspicuous ability and cleverness. By skilful use of the ground he enabled his men to pierce the enemy’s defence, surround and capture them. His courage and devotion to duty under heavy machine-gun fire were a marked feature which greatly influenced his men, and largely and largely contributed to the operation being entirely successful.’

Herbert Chandos Sydney Davies was born in Elham, Kent, on 12 March 1887. Educated at Lupton School, he attested into the Northumberland Fusiliers for service during the Great War and served on the Western Front with the 6th Battalion from 20 April 1915. He was commissioned into the South Wales Borderers two days later on 22 April 1915, serving on the Western Front with the 1st Battalion. Post war he worked as a Bank Official in Cardiff, where he died in March 1969.
