The Monte Carlo Rally, since 1973 a round of the World Rally Championship, was first held in January 1911. Pre-War events, from starting points all over Europe and North Africa, were intended to demonstrate improvements and innovations in cars and to promote Monaco as a tourist resort. The seventh running of the event in 1928 was won by the Frenchman Jacques Bignan in a Fiat 509, who started from Bucharest
