Lieutenant William Ernest Watson Thomas was appointed 2nd Lieutenant with the 8th Service Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment on 31.10.1917 and was promoted Temporary Lieutenant on 1.5.1919. Thomas, who was fluent in French, was awarded the Croix de Guerre for his work in the evacuation of some 150 civilians from the village of Haussy, E. of Cambrai on 15.10.1918.
