During the Great War, after service as a Private in the 5th South African Mounted Rifles, Johnson was commissioned into the 2/6th (Cyclist) battalion Royal Sussex Regiment. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 24.6.1915, he was promoted Lieutenant on 1.6.1916 and was later promoted Captain. After the Great War he served in India and was entitled to the I.G.S. 1908 with clasp, Afghanistan N.W.F. 1919.
