An Australian casualty group of three to 2nd Lieutenant G.D. Orchard, 16th battalion, Australian Infantry

Geoffrey Duncan Orchard was one of two sons of the Rev. James Orchard of Adelaide and Perth, Australia. At the outbreak of the war he was living in Jamestown, S. Australia, and enlisted with his brother Gilbert in 1914. Gilbert was mortally wounded in Gallipoli and died on 29 April 1915. Geoffrey survived the early years of the war but was mortally wounded in what the battalion War Diary called a 'special operation' at Beaumetz Le Verquier on 18 September 1918. He was in hospital until finally succumbing to his wounds on 15 October 1918, at the age of 3l years.
