Sir John Dugdale Astley served in the Eastern Campaign of 1854-55, including the battle of Alma, siege and fall of Sebastopol, repulse of the sortie on 26 October 1854 (severely wounded in the arm and mentioned in despatches), and assault of the Redan on 8 September 1855 (mentioned in despatches). He was also awarded the Legion of Honour, Knight 5th class. Sir John Astley, 3rd Baronet, sat as Conservative M.P. for North Lincolnshire 1874-1880.
