Kenneth Edward Topp was born in Durban, Natal, on 16 January 1923, the son of Major Percy Topp, and the elder brother of John Topp, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the South African Air Force on 5 September 1942. He was promoted Lieutenant on 5 March 1943, and served during the Second World War with No. 12 Squadron in Italy.
