A fine immediate D.C.M. for Italy awarded to Sergeant Alexander S. Treeby, 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards, for gallantry in the fighting around Cassino
Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.VI.R. (2614627 Sjt., G. Gds.) nearly extremely fine

D.C.M. London Gazette 29 June, 1944.
“On the night of the 18/19 Feb 44 Sgt Treeby was in command of No. 6 Platoon when the Germans launched a Company attack on his position. His Platoon bore the brunt of the attack for a considerable period. During this time Sgt Treeby was a continual source of inspiration to his Platoon, encouraging them and cheering them on all the time, besides killing four Germans himself. His whole Platoon speak in glowing terms of his leadership and example. It was subsequently discovered that 40 Germans lay dead in front of his Platoon position. For outstanding leadership and personal devotion to duty I recommend that he be given an immediate award of the D.C.M.”
Sergeant Alexander Treeby was killed in action on 8 April, 1944, aged 29, and is buried in Cassino War Cemetery, Italy.
