M.C. London Gazette 4 October, 1919: 8th Bn. A. & S. Highrs. seconded to 50th Bn. Machine Gun Corps ‘For conspicuous gallantry and ability when in command of a mounted patrol on the 6th/7th November, 1918, near Taîsneres. He succeeded in obtaining touch between two divisions under considerable machine-gun fire. He sent back two excellent reports, remaining out himself until dusk, when he brought back a very good situation report. On the 7th November he again did well.’
Ralph Nicoll-Searancke was born at Mitcheldean, Gloucs., and educated at Chigwell School. Before the war he was a planter at Hatbawa, Rambukkana, Ceylon, and enlisted in December 1914 with the 14th London Regimnet. He went to France in March 1915, and was wounded at the battle of Loos in September 1915. He was commissioned into the 8th Bn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in December 1915, and returned to France in April 1916, where he was again wounded in August 1916.
