SOUTH AFRICA 1877-9, 1 clasp, 1879 (1887 Pte., 1-24th Foot); INDIA GENERAL SERVICE 1854-95, 1 clasp, Burma 1887-89 (1592 Pte., 1st Bn. Hamps. R.); ARMY L.S. & G.C., V.R. (2432 Pte. Norf. R.) co ntact marks to the first two, otherwise nearly very fine (3)

Mr. M. Barnes enlisted into the 37th Foot (now the Hampshire Regt.), in February, 1878, but being imbued with martial ardour he volunteered for the Zulu War, and went out with the 24th Foot (South Wales Borderers). His adventures started early as he was shipwrecked en route, but ultimately reached South Africa. Under the command of Lord Chelmsford, he was with the force which defeated the Zulus at Ulundi, which ended the reign of Cetewayo. After Ulundi, Barnes returned to Gosport and rejoined the Hampshires, with whom he went to India, where he served three years. Trouble in Burma called the Hampshire Regt. into that sphere of action, and for several months King Theebaw and his army provided work for our troops, and attempted to stop them 'on the road to Mandalay,' but without avail. That august monarch and his 'umbrella' were captured and deported to India, while his domains were added to our Indian Empire by 'Right of Conquest.' During the campaign Barnes transferred to the Norfolks, who were under orders for England. He finished his 21 years service, receiving the long service and good conduct medal; his other two are the Zulu and Burma medals. Mr. Barnes is now holding the position of steward at the Conservative Club, Saffron Walden. (ref copy . newspaper cutting sold with the lot).
