Lord William Leslie de la Poer Beresford was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry during a reconnaissance across the White Umvolosi River, with the 9th Queen’s Royal Lancers, on July 3rd, 1879. From 1881 to 1894 he was Military Secretary to the successive Viceroys of India, Lords Dufferin and Lansdowne.
