Elliott Hyndman was appointed an Ensign in the 27th Bengal Native Infantry on 7 June 1844. Arriving in India, he was soon in action, serving in the 1st Sikh War, seeing action at Ferozeshuhur, for which he received the Sutlej Medal. He was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1847 and appointed Adjutant in August 1855. He was promoted to Captain in August 1858 and attained the rank of Major in June 1864. Major Hyndman joined the Staff Corps in 1866. On 26 October 1869 he died at sea on S.S. Delta while on leave.
