William Charters attested for the 24th Regiment of Foot and served with them during the Second Sikh War, being wounded in action at the Battle of Chilianwala on 13 January 1849. Advanced Sergeant-Major, he was appointed Quartermaster on 18 July 1862, and retired with the honorary rank of Captain on 30 July 1872.
