Preston George Avery was born in Cawsand, Cornwall, on 25 July 1876 and joined the Royal Navy as a Shipwright on 8 October 1897. Commissioned Warrant Shipwright on 4 May 1911, he served during the Great War in H.M.S. Bellerophon from the outbreak of War to 24 May 1918, and was present at the Battle of Jutland, where the dreadnought battleship H.M.S. Bellerophon fired a total of 62 twelve-inch shells and 14 four-inch shells during the battle.
Avery was placed on the Retired List on 6 June 1922. During the course of his service he had received a Royal Humane Society Testimonial on Vellum on 3 June 1919. He died on 31 December 1927.
