Sidney Smith was born at Ardleigh, near Colchester, Essex, in 1879 and attested for the Grenadier Guards at Colchester on 28 December 1897, having previously served in the Royal Artillery Militia. He served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 16 April 1900, and died of enteric fever at Standerton on 10 March 1901.
