Oldham Athletic AFC, under chairman Ian Stott and manager Joe Royle, achieved promotion to the then top-flight division of English football by winning the Division 2 title in May 1991. Oldham were founder members of the Premier League in 1992, but were relegated two years later and fell to the third tier by 1997
