China 1900, 1 clasp, Relief of Pekin (2672 Pte. W. Evans. 2nd. Rl: Welsh Fus:) nearly extremely fine £400-500

William Evans was born in Westbury, Shropshire on 20 March 1864 and attested as a Boy Soldier with the 23rd Regiment of Foot on 20 January 1879. Upon reaching the age of 17 on 20 March 1881 he formally joined the Regiment with the rank of Private, and in the same year the 23rd Foot was re-designated the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Promoted Corporal on 18 September 1890, he was appointed Lance Sergeant on 15 June 1891, and on 1 July 1892 was promoted Sergeant Master Tailor. He served with the Regiment in China from 14 December 1898 to 2 November 1900, and was part of the contingent of 300 men of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers that saw action at the Relief of Peking in August 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion. Returning to the U.K. in November 1900, he was discharged at Wrexham on 4 April 1901, after 22 years and 75 days’ service.
