Thomas Callaghan was born in London, and attested for the 61st Foot at the city of his birth, in October 1842. He advanced to Sergeant in July 1850, and served with the Regiment during the Indian Mutiny. His service papers record, ‘wounded by a piece of shell on the right thigh on 16 September 1857’. This, however, is not recorded on the latest published transcription of the casualty roll. Callaghan was discharged 17 May 1864, having served 21 years and 34 days with the Colours.
