Charles Rumble was born at Redhill, Surrey, in 1869 and attested for the Northamptonshire Regiment in London on 8 July 1890. He served with the 1st Battalion in India from 5 October 1892 until 21 April 1898, and was present with the Tirah Field Force under Lieutenant-General Sir W. Lockhart during the operations on the Punjab Frontier from 2 October 1897 until 6 April 1898. Transferring to the Army Reserve on 24 April 1898, he was recalled to the Colours on 9 October 1899, and served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa from 21 October 1899 until 24 June 1902, being promoted Corporal on 8 August 1901. For his gallantry in South Africa he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, one of only 8 awarded to the Regiment during the Boer War. Promoted Sergeant on 12 July 1902, he was discharged on 27 October of that year after 12 years and 112 days’ service.
