18th Century, Herefordshire, Hereford, R. Biddulph, Penny, 1796, bull breaking its chains, MILTON in exergue, reverse apple-tree and plough within wreath (DH 1; Stainton 39). A late striking with die crack running across animal; minor cabinet friction, otherwise extremely fine and attractively patinated, very rare (£60-80)

Struck to mark the return of the issuer as Member of Parliament for Herefordshire at the Election on 3 June 1796. The obverse symbolises the country breaking free of Tory shackles in electing a Whig.
