M.M. London Gazette 28 August 1918.

The following detail is extracted from the
Southend-on-Sea Memorial Book: ‘Awarded the M.M. for meritorious conduct on the battle front, first for volunteering to take a badly wounded comrade to the dressing station under heavy gun fire, which he did successfully, and secondly in a sudden attack by the enemy he was sent to H.Q. with a message under heavy machine-gun and rifle fire. He was blown off his feet twice, his rifle was smashed to bits but he carried out his mission and returned safely to his battalion.’
