R. T. Clemens enlisted into the 2/4th London Regiment, serving with them in Gallipoli and Egypt. On the disbandment of the 2/4th he transferred to the 1/4th, with whom he served in France, taking part in the Somme Battles, being wounded on 7 October 1916. On 22 January 1918 he received a commission into the 10th London Regiment, returning to first Egypt and Palestine, and then France again, being wounded again on the Somme on 29 August 1918. The Commanding Officer of the 2/10th Londons said of him: ‘He has shown splendid keenness, bravery and ability in the handling and encouragement of his men under dangerous and trying circumstances. His personal example has been splendid, on several occasions owing to casualties he has found himself in command of his company and has taken the situation in hand with marked success.’
