Hugh Percy Nicholson was born in 1893 and attested for the Northumberland Fusiliers (Territorial Force) at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 3 March 1913. He served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 20 April 1915, before transferring to the Army Service Corps on 25 January 1916, and was posted to No. 1 Company, 50th Northern Battalion, Divisional Train, with whom he was awarded an Immediate Meritorious Service Medal. He returned to the U.K. on 24 January 1918, and his unit was disbanded on 27 March 1919.
