General subjects, James Prinsep, 1840, a copper medal by W. Wyon [Calcutta mint, struck after 1843], bust left, rev. frontal elevation of Prinsep’s Ghat, 49mm (Pudd. I, 840.1.3; BHM 1966). Very fine, scarce £150-£200

James Prinsep, FRS (1799-1840), assay master at the Calcutta mint from September 1819, was the advocate behind the uniform coinage of the EIC, first mooted in 1833. A significant numismatist who studied coins of Bactria, the Kushans and the Guptas, part of his collection is now in the British Museum
