Territorial Force Efficiency Medal, G.V.R. (47 Sjt: E. W. Speary. 6/Essex Regt.) worn in parts, therefore fine £60-80

Edward William Speary was born in West Ham, London, in 1884 and joined the Territorial Force on formation in 1908, serving with the 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion, Essex Regiment. On the outbreak of the Great War he was posted to the 6th Battalion, Essex Regiment on 6 August 1914, and was discharged as medically unfit for further service on 15 August 1914. Undeterred, he re-enlisted into the 3rd Battalion, Essex Regiment in October 1914 and served during the Great War on the Western Front from 30 May 1915. Advanced Sergeant in the 9th Battalion, he was twice wounded during the War, appearing in lists of wounded in the Essex Chronicle of 1 September 1916 and the War Office List of 3 October 1918. He was discharged to Class Z Army Reserve on 5 March 1919, and died in Abergavenny in 1953.
