Ida Lilian Margurie Maddy was born in Swan Hill, Victoria, on 1 August 1908. She trained for three years as a Nurse at the Melbourne Hospital and qualified in 1928, and in 1931 she received qualifications from the Central Midwives Board for Scotland after training at the Edinburgh Royal Maternity and Simpson Memorial Hospital. Maddy enlisted into the Australian Army at Melbourne, Victoria, on 20 August 1940. She was discharged as a Lieutenant from 115 Australian General Hospital on 1 April 1944.

Sold with the recipient’s Melbourne Hospital Nurse’s Certificate, dated 13 December 1928, this contained in its original folder; the Edinburgh Royal Maternity and Simpson Memorial Hospital Certificate in Midwifery, dated 1 November 1931, and the Central Midwives Board for Scotland Certificate, dated 3 November 1931.
