Samuel Marland Nield was killed in action on 15 June 1944, while serving in the frigate H.M.S. Blackwood, on which date his ship was torpedoed by the U-764 north-west of Cap de la Hague with a loss of five officers and 53 ratings - her bows were blown off and though taken in tow, she sank on the following day. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. The son of Frank and Katherine Nield of Mossley, Manchester, he was 22 years of age.
