Allon Leslie Povall was born on 16 October 1895. He served with the 3rd (Natal) Mounted Rifles, October 1914-July 1915, and 4th South African Horse, December 1915-July 1917, serving in the South African Rebellion, October 1914-February 1915, then in German South West Africa, February 1915-July 1915, and German East Africa, January-December 1916. Posted to Egypt, July 1918-April 1919, he was commissioned a Temporary 2nd Lieutenant (London Gazette 1 July 1919) and served as a Pilot Officer with the R.A.F. Prior to the Second World War he was living in Kensington, Johannesburg. In October 1940 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the General Service Corps, attached Cape Corps. He attained the rank of Temporary Captain in July 1942 and served in North Africa. He was demobilised in October 1946. With copied service papers.
