John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyle (1678-1743); raised to the peerage as Baron Chatham and Earl of Greenwich, 1705; served under the Duke of Marlborough at Ramillies, Oudenarde, Lille, Ghent and Malplaquet; became Generalissimo of the British army in Spain; quelled the Jacobite rebellion of 1715
