George Atkinson was born in the Parish of Spalding, Lincolnshire, and enlisted into the 36th Foot at Hull on 22 April 1805, for unlimited service, aged 21 years, a labourer by trade. He served with the regiment at Monte Video in 1807, and in the Peninsula 1808-09 and 1811-14. He was discharged at Dublin on 31 October 1827, in consequence of length of service and being worn out, and was admitted to an out-pension at Chelsea Hospital on 12 December 1827.
