David Colquhon Black was born in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, on 18 January 1895. A Clerk by occupation and a member of the ‘3rd Regiment’, living at Hauraki Road, Takapuna, Auckland, he attested for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in August 1915 and was posted to Company ‘A’, 8th Reinforcements, Auckland Infantry Regiment. He landed in Egypt on 20 December 1915 and joined the 2nd Battalion Auckland Infantry Regiment in March 1916. He then embarked for France in April 1916 and was twice wounded in the fighting there - once on 30 September 1916, and again on 4 October 1917 (gunshot wounds to neck and ear). Black returned to his unit in November 1917 and continued to serve until 19 August 1918 when he was reported as ‘injured’ and did not rejoin until 29 September 1918. Sergeant Black was promoted to Warrant Officer Class 2 on 23 October 1918. For his bravery in action whilst serving with the 2nd Battalion Auckland Regiment, he was awarded the Military Medal. He sailed for New Zealand in March 1919 and was demobilised on 2 June 1919.
