Ernest Archie Comley was born in Brisbane, Queensland, in 1889. He enlisted into the Australian Imperial Forces on 18 February 1917. He embarked at Sydney on 9 May 1917 as a member of the Camel Corps reinforcements. Comley disembarked at Alexandria, Egypt, on 20 June 1917 and was posted to the 3rd ANZAC Battalion, Imperial Camel Corps, on 4 September 1917. He took part in the actions at Beersheba (3rd battle of Gaza) and at Tel el Khuweilfe, before being assigned to the Belah Depot on 17 November 1917. In March 1918 he was transferred to the Australian Army Medical Corps and was assigned to the Australian Camel Field Ambulance, joining the unit in the field at Jericho on 9 April 1918. He went down sick in June 1918 and after treatment for several illnesses, he was declared an invalid and was attached to the 5th Light Horse Field Ambulance for a return to Australia. Leaving Suez in December 1918 he landed in Australia in February 1919 and was discharged on 5 April 1919. With copied service papers.
